Familial breast cancer report
The updated NICE guideline 164 on familial breast cancer was
published in June 2013 offering several evidence-based
recommendations in areas including genetic testing, surveillance
and treatment strategies.
Although NICE guidelines have no formal status in Scotland, they
are considered by NHSScotland in the absence of Scottish guidance
from the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN).
A short life working group (SLWG), under the Chairmanship of Dr
Hilary Dobson, Clinical Lead West of Scotland Cancer Network, was
formed to address the applicability of the recommendations from the
NICE guideline for the Scottish population and consider and
identify any implementation challenges posed. Membership of the
group included representation from the three Scottish cancer
networks and lay representation. The group was supported by
Healthcare Improvement Scotland.
This report identifies the recommendations
that should be prioritised for implementation in NHSScotland and
identifies barriers for implementation of those recommendations and
the resources or processes required to overcome these.
