Primary care approach

Driving and supporting improvement in primary care: 2016-2020

Healthcare Improvement Scotland recognises that building a stronger, more sustainable and more integrated primary care will support the drive for improvement in health and wellbeing across the entire system.

Our Driving and Supporting Improvement in Primary Care (2016-2020) report sets out a clear strategic direction for the organisation and outlines our commitment to:

  • build on existing work to support the necessary improvements in Primary Care such as the Scottish Patient Safety Programme for primary care and Living Well in Communities;
  • appropriately re-orientate our programmes in the future, so that there is a strong and consistent focus on supporting primary care in the achievement of the 2020 vision for health and social care;
  • introduce new and practical approaches to supporting primary care to improve the quality of care, initially based around out of hours urgent care and GP quality clusters.
