Organisation of Troponin Testing Services in Acute Coronary Syndromes

Amendment to Appendix 27: Emergency admissions and access to angiography

Following the publication of the Health Technology Assessment Report 4: The organisation of troponin testing services in acute coronary syndromes in January 2004, data on access of emergency admissions to angiography in hospitals with and without on-site facilities for angiography (Appendix 27) were updated by the Information and Statistics Division (ISD).

Table A33.1 shows the revised ISD data for the period April 1999 to March 2001 and Table A33.2 gives recent ISD data for the period April 2001 to March 2003.

The data have been revised by ISD in light of coding issues. For the ISD data published in the Health Technology Assessment report, there was a discrepancy in the way in which hospitals recorded angiography data. For example, some hospitals recorded angiography and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) as one event if the interventions were performed simultaneously while other hospitals recorded the interventions as two events.

The revised ISD data have attempted to resolve the inconsistency in the recording of angiography data. It assumes that where an emergency CABG or PCI has been recorded, an angiography has been undertaken and the interventions are recorded as two events. The revised data also include recent data for the period April 2001 to March 2003.

It is important to note that the revised ISD data do not change the conclusions and recommendations reached in the Health Technology Assessment Report 4.

ISD are taking forward the issues arising from coding inconsistency.
