Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in cancer management

Amendment to the Report

Following publication of the Health Technology Assessment Report 2: PET Imaging in Cancer Management in 2002, it has been brought to our attention that that economic model used sensitivity and specificity data for computed tomography (CT)-positive patients rather than CT-negative patients. The model has now been recalculated using sensitivity and specificity for CT-negative patients.

It is important to note that this revision has resulted in a slight improvement in the incremental cost effectiveness ratio. However, this does not affect the original conclusions published in 2002.

About the Report

This Health Technology Assessment (HTA) set out with two principal objectives:

  1. To determine the role of PET (Positron Emission Tomography) imaging in cancer management: evaluating the clinical and cost effectiveness in terms of impact on patient mortality and morbidity
  2. If PET is found to be clinically and cost effective, to consider the best configuration of PET facilities (and cyclotrons) to serve the Scottish population.
