Draft Clinical Indicators

A Draft National Strategy for Clinical Indicators in Scotland

About the Draft Strategy

NHSScotland organisations require a range of data to monitor and to facilitate improvement of the quality and effectiveness of the clinical services they provide. They are accountable for the clinical services they provide for patients (clinical governance) and without such data carrying out this duty is impossible. The data need to be robust, timely, clearly presented, and embedded in systems that result in them being used in practice. Since it was established in 2003, NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) has published a clinical indicators report annually, to provide information that helps the health service improve the quality of patient care. Now, NHS QIS is developing a new approach to the use of clinical indicators. In addition to publishing some clinical indicators, a wider range of activities will be carried out to i) support improvements to the data that are available in Scotland, and ii) help local NHS organisations use this information in a systematic and consistent fashion. The ultimate aim is to increase the beneficial impact that such data have on the quality of patient care.
