About these reports
NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) undertook an
external quality assurance (EQA) review of the implementation and
management of the GP Appraisal process in Scotland, representing a
12 month period prior to 31 March 2008. Following analysis of each
NHS board, local reports and a national overview have been
produced.
Background
In 2003, NHS Education for Scotland (NES) developed and
implemented a national GP appraisal scheme. In 2004, GP appraisal
became a requirement to be admitted to and remain on, the
Performers List in line with the NHS (Primary Medical Performers
List) (Scotland) Regulations 2004. In 2007, NHS QIS established a
steering group to initiate and deliver an external review programme
to assess implementation and management of the GP appraisal process
throughout 14 NHS boards in Scotland.
