Welcome to the first annual report on Healthcare
Improvement Scotland’s work. We were set up on 1 April 2011
to support healthcare professionals in Scotland find and use the
best advances in clinical practice, medicines and technologies to
improve healthcare and to provide public assurance through scrutiny
of the quality and safety of that care.
This document sets out some of the key achievements in our first
year of operation.
Quite simply, our role is to help healthcare providers improve
the care patients receive. To do this, we focus our work on an
‘integrated cycle of improvement’, which brings together three key
elements: evidence, improvement and scrutiny. These elements
provide the main headings for this report as we describe our
commitment to patient care across Scotland and our contribution to
NHSScotland’s Healthcare Quality Strategy.
