Improving cardiovascular care
Scottish mortality rates for heart disease and stroke remain
high by Western standards, but premature deaths for both diseases
continue to fall.
Heart disease and stroke remain two of the major causes of
admission to hospital and treatment of both diseases remains a
major part of the work of NHSScotland.
National targets are to reduce the death rate from heart disease
and stroke in people aged under 75 by 60 and 50 per cent
respectively by 2010. In 2007, a further target was set to reduce
coronary heart disease mortality in the under 75s in the most
deprived 15 per cent of Scotland.
We have established a programme of work in relation to heart
disease to drive and support ongoing improvements in patient
outcomes.
