Assessment Report 2010 (002)

Evidence-based assessment report 2010/002

This EBA report was considered by SHTG on 29 April 2010. Of particular note this quarter is the summary on bariatric surgery for obesity.

Evidence suggests that for moderately to severely obese people (BMI ≥30 and <40), bariatric surgery is a clinical and cost effective intervention compared to non-surgical options. NHS QIS has published an evidence note on this topic and the National Planning Forum have convened a group to consider the issues presented by bariatric surgery. Other topics considered in this report include portable monitoring devices for home diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).

The report also contains four summaries of papers relating to implementation support or health services research methodology. A guide to assist with the implementation of Doppler guided intraoperative fluid management, prepared by the NHS Technology Adoption Centre, is highlighted.
