Management of hip fracture

Management of hip fracture in older people costing report and template

The costing report, template and SIGN Guideline 111 can be found here (External Site)

About the costing report

The objective of the clinical and resource impact report is to assist NHS boards in Scotland to plan for the financial implications of implementing the SIGN Guideline 111 ‘Management of hip fracture in older people’ recommendations considered to have the greatest resource impact. This report does not reproduce the SIGN guideline and should be read in conjunction with it.

The total costs of implementing these recommendations across NHSScotland are estimated to be £1,728,000 per year. £173,000 in hospital costs would be saved by the risk reduction in the incidence of symptomatic DVT. There would be further savings in reduced acute hospital stay and post-discharge but these have not been quantified or costed.

Costing template for management of hip fracture in older people

The report is included in a costing template. The template contains costs for each hospital and NHS board. It is designed to be used as an online template and can be adapted to suit individual user’s needs. STEP 3 Costing report summarises the costs, together with how the costing template was developed. It is designed so it can be printed out as a hard copy report for local use.

Target users

This clinical and resource impact report will be of interest to health professionals involved in budgeting, finance and implementation in primary care, hospitals, community health services and voluntary and community organisations.
