Gartnavel General January 12

Gartnavel General Hospital announced inspection January 2012

Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow, is in the west of the city and operates in close partnership with the Western Infirmary, Glasgow. It contains 558 staffed beds and has a broad range of healthcare specialties. Also on this site is the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre with 170 beds.

We previously inspected Gartnavel General Hospital in May 2011. That inspection resulted in five requirements and two recommendations. The inspection report is available on the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website http://www.healthcareimprovementscotland.org/HEI.aspx.

We carried out an announced inspection to Gartnavel General Hospital on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 November 2011.

We assessed the hospital against the NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) standards and inspected the following areas:

  • ward B4 (oncology)
  • ward B5 (oncology)
  • ward B6 (chemotherapy/oncology)
  • ward B8 (oncology)
  • ward B9 (oncology)
  • ward 1C (ophthalmology)
  • ward 3A (care of the elderly)
  • ward 3C (care of the elderly/stroke rehabilitation)
  • ward 4A (general surgery/vascular), and
  • ward 7C (respiratory).

The improvement action plan for this inspection has now been removed from the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website, as the inspection took place more than 16 weeks ago.  Please contact NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde for further information on progress against this action plan.
