Belford Hospital June 12

HEI test

"Our inspectors found that the hospital was clean and policies were up to date. However, further improvement is required to ensure that all staff groups implement all standard infection control precautions.”
Susan Brimelow - Chief Inspector

Belford Hospital

Unannounced inspection

Inspection Date: 8 May 2012

Belford Hospital, Fort William, contains 34 inpatient beds, a 10 bedded day case unit and provides a wide range of healthcare specialties. This includes consultant-led general medical and general surgical services. The accident and emergency department is one of the busiest mountain trauma units in Europe.

We previously inspected Belford Hospital in July 2011. That inspection resulted in two requirements and three recommendations. The inspection report is available on the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website http://www.healthcareimprovementscotland.org/HEI.aspx. We carried out an unannounced inspection to Belford Hospital on 8 May 2012. We assessed the hospital against the NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) healthcare associated infection (HAI) standards and inspected the following areas:

  • accident and emergency
  • combined assessment unit
  • day case unit
  • high dependency unit, and
  • ward 1 (acute mixed/acute rehabilitation).

The improvement action plan for this inspection has now been removed from the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website, as the inspection took place more than 16 weeks ago.  Please contact NHS Highland for further information on progress against this action plan.
