HEI test

“We observed staff complying with hand hygiene practice after they had been in contact with patients and there was good provision of alcohol hand rubs. However, we also found poor communication between the infection control team and staff, and there was inconsistent completion of documentation relating to the cleaning of vehicles.”Susan Brimelow - Chief Inspector

Scottish Ambulance Service

HAI unannounced inspection

Inspection Date: 12 and 14 June 2012

The Scottish Ambulance Service provides an emergency ambulance and patient transport service across Scotland. The service is split into five divisions: north, east central, south east, west central and south west. The national headquarters is based in Edinburgh.

We previously inspected the Scottish Ambulance Service in June, 2011. That inspection resulted in fifteen requirements and five recommendations. The inspection report is available on the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website http://www.healthcareimprovementscotland.org/HEI.aspx

We carried out an unannounced inspection to the Scottish Ambulance Service between Tuesday 12 and Thursday 14 June 2012.

We assessed the service against the NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) healthcare associated infection (HAI) standards. We inspected ambulances in the following accident and emergency (A&E) departments on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 June 2012:

  • Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
  • Borders General Hospital, Melrose
  • Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock
  • Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert
  • Glasgow Royal Infirmary
  • Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride
  • Ninewells Hospital, Dundee
  • Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley
  • Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
  • Southern General Hospital, Glasgow
  • St John’s Hospital, Livingston
  • Victoria Hospital, Fife

The improvement action plan for this inspection has now been removed from the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website, as the inspection took place more than 16 weeks ago.  Please contact the Scottish Ambulance Service for further information on progress against this action plan.
