Do not attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR)
Draft Indicator for Adult, Children and Young People Palliative
Care
We are leading an implementation group for the national Do Not
Attempt CPR (DNACPR) policy.
Implementation of the policy is varied but there are
already examples of good practice.
Information for DNACPR leads
DNACPR implementation across Scotland
A number of challenges have been identified by NHS boards. This
indicator has been developed to support palliative care improvement
by:
- complementing existing educational
resources
- supporting improvements, and
- monitoring progress.
Contained in the indicator
The draft DNACPR indicator focuses on four areas of
improvement:
- all resuscitation attempts are carried out in line with the
national resuscitation guidelines of the Resuscitation Council (UK)
and DNACPR or CYPADM policy
- all recognised expected deaths have a DNACPR/CYPADM
decision documented in line with national policy
- the NHSScotland DNACPR or CYPADM form is completed correctly
for every DNACPR decision, and
- all advance/anticipatory care plan templates must include a
field about resuscitation status and DNACPR/CYPADM
decision.
Testing of the draft DNACPR indicator
NHS boards are conducting a 12 month testing exercise,
consisting of 2 six month periods, to ensure the accuracy
and validity of this indicator. The first testing period ran from
December 2011 to June 2012 and the second period will be from
November 2012 to April 2013. Guidance is provided for these
boards.
Results from the second period of testing will be recorded
using the following form:
