Boceprevir for the treatment of genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C

NHSScotland should note that:

  1. Recommendations of NICE Single Technology Appraisals (STAs) have no status in NHSScotland.
  2. NHS boards should adhere to the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) advice.

SMC published Statements of Advice (722/11 and 723/11) on this medication for this indication in October 2011. Separate submissions were considered in relation to patients whose previous treatment has failed and patients not previously treated. The advice stated that:

boceprevir (Victrelis®) is accepted for use within NHSScotland for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV) genotype 1 infection, in combination with peginterferon alfa and ribavirin, in adult patients with compensated liver disease who have failed previous therapy.

And:

boceprevir (Victrelis®) is accepted for use within NHSScotland for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV) genotype 1 infection, in combination with peginterferon and ribavirin, in adult patients with compensated liver disease who are previously untreated.

3. There is no material difference between the recommendations of the NICE STA and SMC.
