Patient safety

Ensuring that patients are kept safe within
the healthcare setting is central to ensuring improvements in the
quality of patient care. A number of initiatives within our
organisation are aimed at improving patient safety from a variety
of perspectives.
Our Scottish
Patient Safety Programme started in 2008 and is currently
bringing about a range of local improvements, including dedicated
initiatives relating to sepsis, primary care, paediatric care,
mental health and maternity care.
Our next key stage is to deliver an integrated
programme for patient safety improvement that will support boards
across all the key initiatives and in line with Scottish Government
ambitions.
But the changes that we take place can’t just
be for the short term. To help keep patients safe well into the
future, we will work with NHS boards to ensure that they have an
internal structure that allows for a culture of self-sustaining and
continuous quality improvement.
